Overview of the Music in Me program

Part of the Harmony Road Music Course

While it provides a great introduction to the piano for the very young, this repeatable two semester program develops singing, keen and accurate ear-training, strong rhythmic development and beginning note reading, reinforced through fun, creative activities and games. Parent participation is a fun and vital part of class.

1. Fun with parents and new friends -- At this age, learning music is so much more successful when it is done with other children. And having adults involved and participating let children not this is not just a "kids thing".

2. Learning music -- Like all early childhood music programs, this class is incredibly fun with singing, dancing and instruments. But here's the big difference: Within all this fun, Harmony Road students are actually learning about music -- basic notation, note name with solfege (DO RE MI instead of A B C), composition, steady beat, rhythm and keyboard.

3. Brain benefits -- Five months after we are conceived, music begins to capture our attention and wire our brains for a lifetime of aural experience. "Learning to make music engages and demands coordination among many brain regions, including those that process sights, sounds, emotions and memories," says Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, a Harvard University neurologist. Do a quick search for the benefits of music education and you'll be convinced that it's the best thing you can do for your child.

4. Weekly 45 minute classes -- We have never seen a bored child in our classes. (Distracted, yes -- bored, no.) The frequent change of activities keeps attention and helps reinforce skills and concepts. Children are eager to hear the CD in the car, make music at home and come back next week for class.

5. Holistic approach -- Hearing ... moving ... singing ... creating ... sharing ... reading ... and playing music. No matter what the age, at Harmony Road we learn music in a way that is similar to the way we learned to speak our native language. Jan Keyser, the founder, creator, composer and illustrator for Harmony Road, believes we have two native languages -- and one of them is music.

6. Harmony Road curriculum  -- Each course is specifically designed for the specific age range and their abilities. As your child grows, the research-based curriculum grows with them. Harmony Road is an internationally acclaimed program and can only be taught be a certifed teacher.

7. Is this class worth the investment? -- Absolutely! If you want your infant or toddler to participate in any formal music education endeavors at a later date, whether it is a private lesson, dance class, singing or musical theater, this is the most important music education your child will receive. The benefits will last a lifetime and learning and moving to music will become second nature.

8. What role does the adult play in class? -- The Music in Me class is not a play group. Children develop a positive disposition to music and learning by watching your joy. The adults are encouraged to participate at their comfort level, keeping in mind that their child looks to them for an example of joyful music-making. The main interaction is between you and your child. There are no wrong answers in our classes. We do ask the adults to respectively refrain from excess conversation during class and silent cell phones so everyone receives the maximum benefits from our interactive music program.

Overview of the Kids' MusicRound

Kids’ MusicRound® is a singing, laughing, giggling, jiggling, clapping, dancing, bouncing, fun-filled, award-winning music and movement experience for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.  With the KMR children's music classes, parents learn how to bring out a child's natural curiosity about music in a playful, encouraging environment.

1. Best for babies -- Babies begin feeling the beat in their little bodies from the earliest age, and they are amazing! By the time they start to walk, they are already moving to the beat. All children are born with music intelligence or music ability. The best time to nurture this innate talent is at birth.

3. Brain benefits --  Research shows us that musical intelligence will atrophy if not stimulated. An environment abundant in musical experiences and activities will sustain your baby’s musical gifts. In addition, this is a wonderful time for musical bonding with your baby. Babies do just fine in either an infant music class or a mixed-age class setting.  Your teacher will help you adjust the activities.

4. Weekly 45 minute classes -- We have never seen a bored child in our classes. (Distracted, yes -- bored, no.) The frequent change of activities keeps attention and helps reinforce skills and concepts. Children are eager to hear the CD in the car, make music at home and come back next week for class.

5. Your child's development -- First and foremost, Kids’ MusicRound is focused on developing the necessary skills of keeping beat and singing in tune (basic music competence). Participation in music also helps to develop coordination, self-confidence, social skills and language development.

6. Kids' MusicRound curriculum  -- Kids’ MusicRound has created nine collections rotated over three years. The three summer collections are compilations of favorite activities. If you are repeating a collection with a second child or even the second time with the first child, remember that although you may be familiar with the music, it is a completely new experience for your child. Even the returning child will approach all the activities with a new perspective and insight.
